Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory

This is a remake of sorts of Salvador Dali's 1931 masterpiece, The Persistence of Memory (read my earlier post here). After two decades, Dali has made a number of significant changes. Though it carries virtually the same theme as his earlier work, that is, the annihilation of all humans through war, the theme has been taken even further to take into consideration advances in science and technology. By this time, humans have already successfuly harnessed the power of the atom to make weapons of mass destruction. It was these weapons which brought to a close the war in the Pacific seven years earlier, at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The landscape which used to be just barren, has been blown apart. The clocks, which used to be melted, are now also ripped apart as well. The moving rectangular blocks and rhino horns are allusions to atoms which are always in motion.

This painting came to be known as Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory.

All in all, this work is a very powerful statement against atomic weapons.

"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds."

- J. Robert Oppenheimer
