Happy Birthday!

Birthday greetings to my sister Liza who celebrated her birthday on the 6th, my sister Carol who's celebrating hers today, and my Dad, who's celebrating his on the 12th.

Shell V-Power Ferraris....

After weeks of refueling at Shell service stations, I was finally able to complete my collection of 1:38 scale Ferraris. Shell is selling the model Ferraris for P50.00 each for every purchase of P500.00 worth of Shell V-Power fuel, or for P100.00 if you buy P500.00 worth of other Shell fuels.

The models are made by Hot Wheels and the quality and detail are pretty good. Unfortunately, they're only made of plastic and not die-cast metal. At only P50.00 though, I'm not complaining.

Completing the collection isn't as easy as you may think. First of all, I don't really travel all that much, so I had to be a bit patient as I waited for the needle on my fuel gauge to go down before I could refuel again. Secondly, not all Shell service stations have the complete model line-up in stock, so I have to ask what models they have available before I refuel. The illusion of choice....

It's nice to believe that we are all masters of our own fate. The captains of our own ships. The average Joe would probably prefer to believe the concept of free choice other than predestination. To believe in predestination is to believe that all our actions are of no consequence and our fate is predetermined and inescapable. Or, that our actions do have some little consequence over some bits and pieces of our lives but the ultimate outcome remains carved in stone.

I don't know.

The best I can think of is that life is like a game of Monopoly, or poker. There is still skill involved, but skill is nothing without a good roll of the die or luck of the draw. Skill and perseverance by themselves are probably not enough, otherwise everyone working their tails off should be successful eventually. We all know this is not the case. Hero or traitor?

Is marine Col. Ariel Querubin a hero or a traitor? It's hard to tell. Especially since we don't know all the facts regarding recent events which have been seemingly hidden by a veil of military secrecy.

Col. Querubin was one of the three military officers relieved last February 24 for allegedly being involved in a plot to overthrow the government. Three days later, he led a group of marines in refusing the authority of incoming marine commandant Brigadier General Nelson Allaga. What resulted was a tense standoff which lasted several hours before finally being resolved.

To further fuel the controversy, Querubin's wife was said to be a recipient of a check amounting to P3,000,000.00 in behalf of a Philippine Marine cooperative, with the funds originating from a foundation with Estrada connections.
