A sad day for media....

Today's a sad day for Philippine media. On this day the renowned journalist Teodoro Benigno Jr., and Reyster Langit, mediaman, and son of famed veteran broadcaster Rey Langit, both passed away as a result of complications arising from serious illness. Teodoro Benigno was afflicted with liver cancer, while Reyster Langit, cerebral malaria.

No, I have not known any of these men personally, but I feel their loss nonetheless.

I have been a reader of Teodoro Benigno Jr.'s column in the Philippine Star, Here's the Score for quite a some time now, and I've always admired, even envied, his insightful and thought-provoking writing. It's too bad that he will never write another column anymore. But it was his time, and he already has a lot history of behind him. He was the Presidential Press Secretary during the administration of former President Aquino, and for almost 60 years served as an editor and writer for a string of various publications and press organizations until his death. He was 79.

Reyster Langit, on the other hand, still had a lot of history to make. Alas, he never had the chance, as no one expected that his assignment in Palawan covering the malaria outbreak would be his last. Victim to a bite from an Anopheline mosquito bearing the Plasmodium spp. parasite, he died within a matter of days after being diagnosed. He was just 32.

I suppose I can relate to some extent, since I'm just about the same age as Reyster Langit, and as a father myself, and can only imagine the sorrow of losing a beloved son.

Truly, the death of these individuals represent a great loss to Philippine journalism and the broadcast industry.

Requiescat in pace.
