Habemus Papam!

Habemus Papam! - We have a new Pope!

The first tell-tale signs took place at around 5:50 P.M. in the Vatican (11:50 P.M. Manila time). First there was the plume of white smoke coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. Then there was the tolling of the bells confirming that indeed a new Pope had been elected.

Within two days after the conclave had convened and after only four elections, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has been elected the 265th spiritual successor of St. Peter and the leader of more than 1.1 billion Catholics the world over.

Taking the name Benedict XVI, he shall continue on where the great John Paul II left off. A known conservative and traditionalist, as cardinal he has vigorously spoken out against liberalist theology, religious pluralism, progressive Catholicism, relativism and moral issues like homosexuality, birth control, the marriage of priests and the ordination of women. Maybe...just maybe...it is exactly this what the Catholic Church needs right now, in this era of unquestioning tolerance, decadence and unbridled debauchery. We can only wait and see what his papacy will bring to the Church.

Let us take a moment of silence on this momentous occassion to thank God for our new spiritual leader and pray that Pope Benedict XVI be guided by the Holy Spirit and prove to be a worthy Vicar of Christ in these troubled times.

Viva il Papa!
