Victory in Europe Day....

Image hosted by Photobucket.comToday marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe. Exactly 50 years ago, on May 8, 1945, the unconditional surrender of all remaining German forces took effect, via a document signed a day earlier at General Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims.

The surrender of Germany signaled the end of six years of fighting and suffering in Europe. Total number of losses to all European nations is estimated to be as high as 40 million. Of Poland's 6 million dead, almost half, or 2.9 million lives lost, are Jews, victims of Hitler's Final Solution.

Let us not forget the courage of the Allied forces, the sacrifices made, the sufferings endured, and the lives lost in the pursuit of peace and freedom in the most extensive armed conflict in history.
